Company Overview

Chemie Products Private Limited manufactures specialty polyurethane chemicals – lacquer, paste, dosing, and liquid – supplying 3,040 kg a year of high-value process chemicals. Raw materials are sourced from India and Egypt. The facility runs on natural gas and CNG, with solar installation underway.

A workforce of 150 permanent and 25 contract staff supports the operation. Chemie is in the midst of a genuine clean-energy transition – shifting to CNG vehicles and PNG-powered generators – but its formal GHG measurement and effluent treatment are not yet in place.

The Challenge

Performance. Proof. Recognition

Chemie had a strong safety record and a real clean-energy transition in motion, but no formal GHG measurement, minimal water infrastructure, and effluent treatment still on the roadmap. The challenge was to capture the progress genuinely underway while being honest about the environmental measurement gaps that kept its score low.

OUR APPROACH

Evidence. Measure. Benchmark.

Build To Sustain assessed Chemie across the seven pillars, recording its clean-energy transition and safety practices, and testing environmental claims against evidence – including correctly reading its effluent-treatment status as planned rather than in place

EXECUTION

Validate. Rate. Certify.

Chemie completed the assessment. Its solar (~30% with expansion planned), CNG-vehicle and PNG-generator transition, rainwater harvesting, zero lost-time injuries, and community focus (around 60% of CSR to girl-child education) were recorded. Its stated effluent-treatment plan for 2027 was correctly scored as not-yet-in-place. Low water infrastructure and the absence of GHG tracking constrained the environmental dimension.

The result was a full scorebook and a Committed-tier certificate.

EXECUTION

The Assessment in Detail

Chemie Products was rated Committed with an overall score of 40/100. Its safety and governance results were reasonable, but a low environmental dimension – reflecting minimal water infrastructure and no GHG tracking – kept the overall score at the Committed level.

DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS

Environment  26/100

An active clean-energy transition — solar at ~30% with expansion planned, CNG vehicles, PNG generators — and rainwater harvesting are genuine positives. But GHG emissions are not tracked, water metering is absent (WE 2/10), and effluent treatment is planned for 2027 rather than in place, leaving the dimension low.

Social  53/100

Zero lost-time injuries, near-miss tracking, regular fire drills, and on-site first aid; ~60 training hours per employee per year, minimum-wage compliance, and child/forced-labour and equal-opportunity policies. Community focus directs ~60% of CSR budget to education and healthcare, with an emphasis on girl-child education.

Governance  55/100

ISO 9001:2015 certification (voluntary), a Code of Conduct and anti-bribery policy, third-party audits, and a designated sustainability lead. Formal ESG reporting and broader certifications are the main gaps.

STANDOUT STRENGTHS

  1. Strong workplace safety with zero lost-time injuries, near-miss tracking, and regular drills.
  2. An active clean-energy transition: ~30% solar with expansion planned, CNG vehicles, and PNG-powered generators.
  3. A strong community focus, directing ~60% of CSR budget to education and healthcare with an emphasis on girl-child education.

The assessment translates into a prioritised set of next steps — the fastest, highest-impact routes to a stronger rating:

Focus areaRecommended action
Environment (26/100)The clearest constraint: begin GHG tracking, install water metering, and implement the planned (2027) effluent treatment sooner.
Materials & Product (1/13)Introduce recycled/bio content measurement and product carbon footprinting.
Certifications & reportingExpand management-system certifications and begin formal sustainability reporting.

Key Takeaways

  1. Chemie Products earned Committed, with strong safety and an active clean-energy transition.
  2. Environmental measurement — GHG tracking, water metering, and earlier effluent treatment — is the clearest route to Bronze.
  3. The clean-energy transition already underway positions the company well for its next assessment.
