Company Overview

Huntsman International (India) Pvt. Ltd. is the Indian arm of a global specialty-chemicals manufacturer, supplying blended polyol systems used in footwear and industrial polyurethane applications. Its two flagship products supplied into the footwear value chain — DALTOPED and SUPRASEC — move at scale, with combined annual volumes exceeding 1.2 million kilograms.
The operation is substantial: 128 permanent employees supported by 160 contract workers, running continuous chemical-processing lines whose most energy-intensive steps are MDI splitting and prepolymer manufacturing. As part of a multinational group, Huntsman inherits mature corporate systems for governance, safety, and environmental management — but those systems had never been independently rated at the India-operations level in a form a customer could rely on.
The Challenge
Performance. Proof. Recognition
Huntsman supplies large, export-facing manufacturers whose own ESG commitments increasingly cascade down to their suppliers. Where a customer once accepted a supplier’s assurance that it “took sustainability seriously,” that same customer now sends a structured questionnaire and expects evidence: emission figures, safety statistics, certifications, documented policies.
Huntsman had the substance to answer those questions — it tracked emissions, ran energy-efficiency programmes, recycled water, and maintained strong governance — but it lacked a single, independent, benchmarked rating that packaged all of it into a credential a customer could trust at a glance. The gap was not in performance; it was in provable, comparable measurement.
OUR SOLUTION
Evidence. Measure. Benchmark.
Build To Sustain assessed Huntsman using the Sustainability Index Metric (SIM) – a seven-pillar ESG framework spanning Environment, Social, and Governance, scored to 100 points. The assessment is evidence-first: every score rests on documented reality registers, monitoring reports, certificates, policies rather than on assertion.
Data was collected across two layers: foundational operational data through the BTS Bridge platform (products, energy, fuel, waste, water, and transport), and a dedicated ESG questionnaire capturing scorable practices. Scoring combined binary marking for practice-based questions with graduated bands for quantitative metrics such as renewable-energy share and lost-time-injury count, and applied gating logic so that a genuinely non-applicable item never counted against the company.
EXECUTION
Validate. Rate. Certify.
Huntsman completed both data layers and provided supporting evidence for its claims. The assessment evaluated all seven pillars, cross-referencing the Bridge operational data against the ESG questionnaire responses to confirm consistency — for example, verifying that stated water-recycling practices aligned with the reported on-site STP, and that certification claims matched the governance responses.
The output was a full BTS Supplier Rated scorebook: an overall score, the three dimension scores, a pillar-by-pillar breakdown, the product profile, and a set of ESG highlights — followed by a formal certificate reflecting the tier awarded.
EXECUTION
The Assessment in Detail
Huntsman was rated Platinum with an overall score of 91/100 — the highest tier in the framework and the benchmark against which the rest of the assessed cohort was measured. Its performance was remarkably even, with four pillars at or near full marks and only materials stewardship leaving material room to grow.
Pillar scorecard
| Energy & Climate | Water & Effluent | Waste & Circularity | Materials & Product | Health & Safety | Labour & Social | Governance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13/15 | 10/10 | 11/12 | 8/13 | 14/15 | 15/15 | 20/20 |
DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS
Environment 84/100
Formal GHG tracking with reported Scope 1+2 emissions, energy-efficiency initiatives including LED programmes and LNG-powered transport, energy audits, water recycling via an on-site STP, and rainwater harvesting. Full marks on Water & Effluent (10/10).
Social 97/100
A near-perfect social result: a formalised OHS management system, monthly safety training, full PPE coverage, documented emergency and fire-drill routines, on-site first aid, and LTIFR/TRIR tracking — with 30–40% female workforce representation, well above the industry norm. Labour & Social scored a full 15/15.
Governance 100/100
A perfect governance score: a written Code of Conduct, anti-bribery and whistleblower mechanisms, formal ESG and sustainability reporting, third-party audits, a designated sustainability function, data-privacy and business-continuity policies, and product certifications.

STANDOUT STRENGTHS
- Perfect governance (20/20) and near-perfect social (97/100) performance — the strongest combined people-and-ethics profile in the cohort.
- Formal Scope 1+2 GHG tracking, energy audits, and a suite of implemented efficiency initiatives.
- Complete water stewardship: metering, STP-based recycling, reuse for irrigation, and rainwater harvesting (10/10).
- Responsible waste management including authorised hazardous-waste disposal, a formal waste policy, intensity tracking, and container-reuse circularity (11/12).
Improvement Roadmap
The assessment translates into a prioritised set of next steps — the fastest, highest-impact routes to a stronger rating:
| Focus area | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| Materials & Product (8/13) | Expand recycled and bio-based content in products, and complete product-level carbon footprinting and Life Cycle Assessment — the clearest single opportunity to lift the environmental dimension further. |
| Renewable energy | Grow the renewable-energy share of total consumption beyond its current early stage to consolidate the environmental score. |
| Certifications | Formalise ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 to convert already-strong environmental and safety practices into externally certified systems. |
Key Takeaways
- Huntsman earned Platinum — the highest tier — validating a mature ESG profile across all three dimensions.
- The rating gives Huntsman an independent, defensible credential to share proactively with the customers who now ask ESG questions
- Even at benchmark level, the assessment identified a concrete growth path: materials circularity, renewable energy, and formal ISO certification
